چکیده

A spatial characterization of mid-latitude mesoscale rain fields from C-band radar measurements is performed by means of a systematic analysis and modelling of convective raincell shapes. To this aim a large rainfall dataset, derived from an operational C-band dualpolarized radar, has been continuously collected from 1996 to 1999. The radar-derived rain fields consist of 1558 grids of 256×256 km2 with a spatial resolution of 1 km. A new accurate and adaptive algorithm for raincell identification is introduced and thoroughly discussed. From this analysis, a quality-controlled set of 2601 raincells, together with the radial rain intensities (or raincell horizontal profiles), is extracted. Three one-dimensional analytical models of rainfall horizontal profile are reviewed and tested by best fitting their parameters against estimated raincell data. The statistical results of this intercomparison are quantitatively analyzed and discussed in terms of mean rainfall horizontal profiles and root mean square errors.

C-band dual polarization radar retrieval of rainfall: application of an iterative technique with embedded neural-network

Polarimetric radar measurements at C-band require correction for propagation effects before using them for rainfall retrieval. Since differential phase shift Kdp is affected by the spatial variation of the backscattering differential phase shift δ, a new neural-network estimation technique is applied to remove δ effects on Kdp estimate. In this study we also explore a new hybrid iterative techn...

Performance comparison of dual-polarization X-band path attenuation and rainfall microphysical estimates with measured disdrometer raindrop spectra

Recent research has demonstrated the value of polarimetric measurements for the correction of rain-path attenuation at X-band radar frequency and the estimation of rain parameters including drop-size distributions (DSD). The standard remotely-sensed precipitation products, from large operational Sor C-band network radars, have spatial resolutions that are often too coarse to reveal hydrological...

Balloon-borne radiometer measurements of Northern Hemisphere mid-latitude stratospheric HNO3 profiles spanning 12 years

Low-resolution atmospheric thermal emission spectra collected by balloon-borne radiometers over the time span of 1990–2002 are used to retrieve vertical profiles of HNO3, CFC-11 and CFC-12 volume mixing ratios between approximately 10 and 35 km altitude. All of the data analyzed have been collected from launches from a Northern Hemisphere mid-latitude site, during late summer, when stratospheri...

Monitoring high latitude wetlands is required to understand feedbacks between terrestrial carbon pools and climate change. Hydrological variability is a key factor driving biogeochemical processes in these ecosystems and effective assessment tools are critical for accurate characterization of surface hydrology, soil moisture, and water table fluctuations. Operational satellite platforms provide...

Bistatic Radar Configuration for Soil Moisture Retrieval: Analysis of the Spatial Coverage

Some outcomes of a feasibility analysis of a spaceborne bistatic radar mission for soil moisture retrieval are presented in this paper. The study starts from the orbital design of the configuration suitable for soil moisture estimation identified in a previous study. This configuration is refined according to the results of an analysis of the spatial resolution. The paper focuses on the assessm...
